Paper Trails #9: My Mapping Process - Part 2 of 2

Previously, I explained that images of land grants can be found at nclandgrants.com, and I demonstrated how I draw them and create a map on my computer.

This time, I describe how I create jpg images of my Autocad map and convert them into smaller image tiles that are more suitable for viewing online. I used MapTiler for that conversion, but in the future I’ll use the QGIS software for that step. As new tools evolve and I discover new methods, my process has to change as well. Each time I’ve updated my Wilkes land grants website, my process has been slightly different that the time before.

In this video, I also explain how I convert the XY coordinates from my drawing into Lat-Long coordinates for the Google map. This allows the click-to-view feature in the land grants table to work properly.

More history on my website.
