Paper Trails - Maps on June 10th
Bring your compass and your curiosity to the next Paper Trails session as we uncover 250 years of local maps. Join us on Wednesday, June 10th at 3pm as we explore historic maps and surveys to reveal forgotten creek names, early settlements, and clues to how our ancestors used the land. Everyone is welcome to attend this loosely formatted exploration of old documents.
One of the many maps that we’ll explore is the 1947 survey of the Glenn Johnson property. Glenn was the father of NASCAR legend Junior Johnson, and a map of his property was used in court when the family was charged with making moonshine. It shows where the sugar was stored, and where the trucks were loaded for distribution of their product throughout the region.
Below is the map of the Johnson farm in 1947. We’ll take a closer look at this court-ordered map and see what the property looks like today.
